Hospital Needs Actionable Through Design

Client: CINTAS

Abstract

This high level needs report aimed to identify opportunities to standardize processes, improve patient safety, and optimize clinical workflows in high-stakes environments such as labor and delivery (L&D), emergency rooms (ER), and operating rooms (OR). Ethnographic research was conducted across ten hospital sites where we observed hospital workflows, equipment, and communication systems.

Key findings underscored the impact of facility design and equipment standardization on safety and efficiency. Observations revealed challenges in effective communication during emergencies, such as inconsistent alert systems and the inability to summon assistance efficiently. Additionally, insights into human factors highlighted opportunities to reduce clinician cognitive load through smart-connected technologies, such as automated blood loss measurement systems and wearable computing devices.

Further, the project identified the need for improved processes in milk preparation rooms, advocating for plug-and-play solutions that enhance aseptic preparation, inventory tracking, and bedside delivery while increasing registered nurse time with patients. Recommendations also included exploring lighter, wearable security systems for mothers and newborns to enhance safety without compromising comfort.
